Don't Use Shower Soap On Your Face

Dermatologists do not recommend using shower soap on your face. Soap just harsh on your face, perfume, deodorant, and properties of soap is not recommended.

Reason 1: Our Skin is Acidic, While Soap is Alkaline-Based

Your skin’s natural barrier is made up of acid mantle. When the pH scale shows 7, it is neutral. Anything below that is acidic and above it is alkaline. Our skin’s pH balance is generally between 4 and 6.5, even when the skin is very oily. Soap, on the other hand, is extremely alkaline and goes towards the other extreme. So, if you use soap on your skin, it messes with its pH balance and acid mantle, causing it to make skin conditions worse. Hence, it is best to avoid using soap on your face.

Reason 2: Soap Makes your Skin Dry

And no, even if your skin is oily, this does not justify you using soap on your face. Soap strips the skin of its natural oils and makes it tight and dry. If you feel like your skin is very oily, use a face wash especially suited for oily skin that will wash off the oils and dirt from the surface of the skin but will not disturb the skin’s delicate pH balance. Washing your face with soap is like washing it with dishwater liquid or detergent.

Reason 3: Soap can Severely Damage your Skin

Washing your face with the wrong kind of products can leave it looking dull, haggard and wrinkled. And this includes soap. When you use a face wash suited for your skin type, you can be sure that it contains ingredients that are required to keep your skin looking its best. But with a soap, there are no different kinds. The harsh chemicals present in it are useful to clean the skin but not to protect it. While this works perfectly well for the rest of your body, the skin on your face is much more delicate and can easily start looking damaged. So, keep the soap away and invest in a good quality face wash instead.

This doesn’t that mean soaps are necessarily harmful for the skin. Some specialty soaps such as herb-based ones or those made specifically for the face like Royal Expert Skin Whitening Soap which is a powerful antioxidant with full natural whitening agents. This triple action soap ensures a clear, smooth and even toned complexion.

  • Oily Skin: Gel or foaming cleansers work best for oily skin. Of course, avoid cleansers containing oils or heavy emollients. For breakouts, try one with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or natural ingredients, such as tea tree oil.
  • Dry Skin: A cream-based facial cleanser is perfect for dry skin. Avoid bar soaps, which can disrupt your skin's natural barrier, and dry out your skin even more. You can also try cleansing oils, such as olive oil or rose hip oil.
  • Aging Skin: Consider face washes with anti-aging ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acid, or retinol. Products with acids can help you remove dead layers of skin and bring a fresh layer of skin cells to the surface, a process that lessens the look of wrinkles. These ingredients can be harsh on your skin or can sting, so only wash with them a few times a week.
  • Sensitive Skin: Look for a fragrance-free face cleanser that's gentle and nondrying, without alcohol or other harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, a common skin irritant. Try an organic or vegetable-based cleanser with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, honey, or glycerin.

Dermatologists recommend washing your face every morning and evening to help clear away oils, pollutants, and other kinds of dirt that build up on your face. However, if your skin is parched, you might try cleaning it less often to avoid drying your face. A single wash at the end of the day to remove makeup and dirt should be enough.

Washing your face is one of the easiest yet most important things you can do for your skin. If you don’t know how to wash your face properly, just follow these instructions!

Step 1
Pull your hair back. If you’re washing your face at the sink, hold your hair back with an elastic or a headband. If you’re in the tub or shower, either rinse your hair back or put it in a cap. Remember to get bangs/fringes out of the way if you have any.

Step 2
Splash warm water all over your face. Warm water opens your pores and helps you clean deeper, so avoid using cold water if possible. (You might even want to let your face steam in the bath or shower for a few minutes.) Don't dry your face yet!

Step 3
Apply a cleanser or facial soap using gentle, circular motions. Spread all over the face gently, especially if you have acne; scrubbing hard will make it worse or even leave scars. Remember that you don't need a lot of product for a thorough clean.

Step 4
Thoroughly rinse away the soap. Splash your face repeatedly with water, rubbing gently with your hands after each splash. If it all does not come off, wet a cloth and rub your face gently to get the more obvious stuff off, then rinse again.
  • Rinse more than you think you need to. Soap residue will clog your pores, dry out your skin, and possibly even affect your skin’s natural pH. Leaving soap film on your face will make it dirtier than when you started.
  • Pay extra attention to your hairline, jawline, and anything that drips down your neck. It’s easy to neglect these spots while rinsing.

Step 5
With a soft, clean towel, gently pat your face dry. Try not to rub or pull at your skin, which encourages wrinkles.

Step 6
Apply an alcohol free toner with a cotton ball or pad.

Step 7
Apply moisturiser (optional). Doing this won’t make your face any cleaner, but it can enhance the wash by giving your face a healthy, glowing look.
