Do You Need To Use Toner?

"Toner is something I consider a second step of the cleansing process," says Dr. Alicia Zalka, a Yale-affiliated dermatologist. "The benefit is that, when used correctly, it can help remove excess oils and dead skin cells that may lurk on the face after washing. To some extent a toner can help other skin applications penetrate more rapidly. However, this can be the case when one puts a product on moist skin (water can do this). It is a well-known fact that moist skin can better absorb topical products than dry skin. That is why certain products, such as retinol, come with instructions to apply to skin that is dry to avoid irritation from 'over-penetration' so to speak."

Anyone can use them, but they're best suited to Beauties with oily or combination skin. "These skin types are the best candidates for using a toner," says Dr. Tanzi. "Toners that contain glycolic acids help remove excess oil and keep pores clean, and are the best for acne-prone and oily skin. Just be sure to stay away from toners containing alcohol, as you don't want to strip away the natural oils that your skin needs." If you have sensitive, dry skin, look for a toner with natural moisturizers.

That's not all toner can do...

The following are more benefits of using toner:

1. It shrinks pores.

Applying a small amount of toner to a soft cotton ball or pad and gently blotting and wiping your face with it will remove oil and give the appearance of smaller pores.

2. It gives your skin pH balance.

Our skin is naturally acidic, normally with a pH balance of between five and six. After cleansing, due to the alkaline nature of soap, the pH balance of skin gets disturbed. When this happens your skin needs to work overtime to restore the balance (and that may result in oil), but using a toner helps to restore this balance quickly.

3. It adds a layer of protection.

Toners can help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing, thus reducing the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin. It can even protect and remove chlorines and minerals present in tap water.

4. It moisturizes.

Some toners are humectants, which means that they help to bind moisture to the skin.

5. It refreshes skin.

Toner can also be used in lieu of washing your skin when it's oily or dirt. It will leave your skin revitalized, even when you're on-the-go.

6. It can prevent ingrown hairs.

Toners containing glycolic or other alpha hydroxy acids can help to prevent ingrown hairs, so it also aids in grooming.

The key is to look for an alcohol-free formula that contains soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients. Also, never use toners around the eye area as they can irritate skin and sting the eyes.

Step-by-Step Guide Of Using Toner Correctly

Step 1
Choose the type of toner you want. There are many different kinds on the market, but you want to choose one without alcohol, as alcohol can dry out the skin. If you're using a toner to prevent acne, choose one specially formulated for this.

Step 2
Always apply toner to a cleansed face. First, rinse skin with lukewarm water. Then, apply a cleanser suited for your skin type. Massage formula in gentle, circular motions over your face and neck . Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Step 3
Apply a small amount of the toner to a cotton ball or a cotton pad. Avoid soaking the cotton ball so it leaves wet streaks across your face. However, don't leave it so dry you don't feel the toner applied.

Step 4
Always use a clean cotton ball or cotton pad. Saturate the cotton pad with the toner sweep gently across the face and neck, avoiding the eyes. If you have combination skin you may apply toner only to your oiliest areas, which usually fall the T-zone. Never rub your skin while applying toner.

Step 5
Allow the toner to absorb for a minute or two before applying your moisturizer. The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately after toning, as your skin is primed to receive the maximum benefits.
